Today, 12:37 AM I'm in the process of looking for a new host, which is how I found this forum. It has been really helpful reading through the reviews.
I'm looking for a new host because I can't afford mine anymore--I keep having to buy more bandwidth. Today I maxed out at 50 gigs since it's the end of the month. My plan has 10 gigs of disk space & 20gigs of bandwidth--I had to buy 3 extra packs of 10 gigs each. I've got a dedicated IP & SSL certificate. With that and the extra bandwidth, it works out to $46/month. I'm on a "PCI Compliance plan," but the first time I failed the scan & asked for my host's help, they said that would cost extra.
Looking is a bit overwhelming because it's hard to balance out all of the bad reviews with the good--which is where this forum has been helpful.
Through twitter I found out about 48-14 Hosting--they sound pretty good, but I can't find a single review on them, good or bad. So I thought I'd ask here if anyone has experience with them? I know they are on this site, which is how I found it--when I was looking for reviews.
I need about 10 gigs of disk space, and a minimum of 60 gigs bandwidth, but more would be better. A dedicated IP so I can have an SSL (the SSL can be part of the plan or I can get my own).
My site is a wordpress site. I was using zen cart for my online shop, but am in the process phasing that out and setting up a shop using the shopp plugin for wordpress. And with that, I'm looking into using the Stripe gateway.
Any info on 48-14, or other suggestions are appreciated. From reading reviews here, I'm also interested in Site5. Oh, anyone have experience with Laughing Squid? I'm also looking at them, but can't find that many reviews either. I'd also have to buy more bandwidth even to start out with them on their highest plan. I was looking into BlueHost, but am nervous because reviews say they have gone downhill over the past few years. I am nervous about switching to a new host, and having "issues."
Thanks!
Today, 12:58 AM I would stay away from Bluehost since they got bought by EIG. I was with them for about five years and left because of some of the less than desired practices there. They don't shut you down for excessive use, but they do throttle your account to where you may not be happy with the results. I have seen some good reviews here on Site5.
Today, 01:03 AM Right, I read many reviews about BlueHost along those lines. I'm glad I found them before I decided to make the switch. I had not heard of Site5 until I found this forum. And yes, there are many good reviews here about them.

Today, 10:46 AM Hi Traci, Nice to meet you. You spoke with one the designers that helps me out Twitter.
Here is a quick rundown of my company;
- Started as WordPress designer around 2005
- Began hosting for clients I designed for in 2006
- slowly started hosting for other clients that just needed hosting
- mid-2011 joined Web Hosting Talk and put more focus on advertising hosting side of business
I have received a few reviews scattered on Facebook and Twitter, but nothing on Web Hosting Talk as yet. We have clients and customers that are going on their 6th year with us, and the majority of them haven't heard of this website, mainly because I have kept them happy by having their site up and because of that they focus on their business and not worry about website issues. Most people like yourself usually come here to find a better host or even upgrade to a different host because they've outgrown their current one.
A few other things when picking a host;
1. find out how long they have been in business
2. look for reviews (which I know you have been doing)
3. ask them any possible question you can think of before choosing one.
4. even look at their twitter feed if they have. One host I know pretty much has the pattern of compliant-sorry-complaint-sorry on their feed.
So I hope that helps in your decision and there are also other good hosts on this site as well to chose from.
Thanks,
Michael

Today, 12:22 PM Hi Michael,Thanks for replying. Yes, I was talking with one of your guys on twitter. I do have some questions for you.
Your metroplex plan (the biggest one) doesn't have enough disk space for me. Carl (on twitter) said I could add on more disk space--is this correct?
I'm wanting to use Stripe as a gateway to take credit cards directly on my site. Although my database & site won't be storing any of the credit card info since it will be passed on to Stripe, I believe I still need to be PCI compliant. Would I be able to be compliant on this plan (with a dedicated IP & SSL certificate)?
Can you explain how to read your server status on your site? I just checked, and the longest uptime is 15 days. Does that mean 15 days ago that server was down?
Do I have to pay for a whole year if I sign up? Starting out, I'd rather not do that, and pay quarterly until I feel happy with how things are going.
Will using the shopp plugin through wordpress be any problem on your servers--will there be any speed issues?
Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Your Welcome. I know twitter can be limited with trying to say everything in 140 characters, and the odd time statement can be taking the wrong way...which leave 140 characters to correct it
Carl forwarded me the conversation and I created a custom package for you which has the same features as the Metroplex package but with more space to accommodate your needs.
The SSL and dedicated IP are a few steps that will make your site follow the compliance rules. Also the same rules would apply to Strip since they would be taking and storing the information within their servers. I follow the same system....customers information on our server...payments processed outside of the server through paypal or email money transfer for Canadian customers.
I did a system upgrade which required the servers to be restarted which takes about 1-2 to restart and come back online. The upgrade was done at 3am during the slow time. It was also scheduled differently between the servers since some accounts are more active during the week and others during the weekend.
For payments it can be monthly, quarterly, or any monthly schedule that's comfortable for you. I personally don't like upfront yearly payments either so I don't force that option on people. There are some that are comfortable and do pay yearly to avoid missing a month or the hassle of remembering each month, but either option works.
I have setup the Shopp plugin and had no issues with it. Also with WordPress I go through each site and make sure the theme isn't hiding any hack codes, there is isn't extra themes (especially free ones) or plugins sitting around for no reason, and security measures are in place. Also depending on the amount of traffic you receive on your current host I can place figure out which server to set you up on.
Your Welcome and if you have a moment you can email me at michael[@]48-14.com and we can discuss everything in more details.
Thanks again,
Michael

I just haven't had time to sit down and work out everything involved on my end, which I know the whole concept and how it works is not complicated and probably would take me a few hours to put into place. I just want to fully educate myself for any questions, situations, and have some nice banners made before putting it public.
Today, 11:15 PM the question come to my mind, keep paying for extra bandwidth is not a good solution
why not go for some upgrade plan?__________________
