Firstly, I do know that 1 Gigabyte is 1024 Megabytes but I'm just curious whether it's a common practice for web hosts to only give you 1000MB of disk space even though they advertised 1GB. I know that it's not much of a big deal but the 24MB lost would eventually get bigger for say a 20GB plan. Does your web host do this?

Take this statement for how it is intended, not to be offensive: "Most people do not know the difference."Only those really involved with computers will know the difference of 1024 vs 1000MB. We used to offer true GB storage packages, but the number of Support Inquiries regarding "What is this extra 24MB for?" was enormous. We found it easier to just keep it simple for everyone!

Yesterday, 06:51 PM That is correct, in space when you refer to 1 GB its 1000 MB. In RAM when you refer to 1 GB its 1024. Just like then you say 10 Megabits in bandwidth its rounded to 10000 Kbits. The industry accepted this as a norm.

And actually if we go to providers offering the exact space, they don?t get it either. If you buy a 2 TB drive you get 1,8 usable space,
So thats almost 200 GB lost.
So if you actually buy a server with a 250 GB drive, you don?t get the full 250 GB for usage either.

It would look cooler than unlimited, but then I guess everyone would know its fake, just like unlimited is as well.
